Nikon 'Small World' Winners Announced

The world of microscopic photography unveils the winners of one of its most prestigious contests Tuesday. And USA TODAY has a sneak peek.

Now in its 37th year, the Nikon "Small World" contest is one of the longest-running in science, saluting images taken through the microscope.

The winners are announced Tuesday, Aug 16 at 10 a.m. EDT, but we are pleased to present some of the award photos, insects up close and personal, a bit ahead of schedule.

As a judge for this year's contest, I can tell you that it was not easy to pick out winners.

The entrants were truly a testimony to the expertise of the entire field of microscopy. It will be well worth your while to scan all the winners after Tuesday's announcement.
