Kate Middleton's style

It was only a matter of time until the fashion choices of the future Queen of England came into the spotlight! Just a few hours after the engagement of Prince William and Kate Middleton was announced, style commentators from all over the globe were voicing their opinions on the sartorial decisions of the latest royal-to-be. While most of us (this writer included) seem to agree that Ms Middleton's style is virtually flawless, others were not so kind, with one self-appointed expert declaring Prince William's fiancee to be suffering from a case of "fashion constipation."

Princess-perfect, or too conservative? Kate Middleton's sense of style has drawn both praise and criticism.

Not since Catherine Zeta Jones gained two decades to close the gap on Michael Douglas has there been such a brazen display of lamb dressed as mutton," the author sniped. "As with Diana at her engagement, fashion template she is not. Instead, Ms Middleton is obsessive-compulsive spick and span."

The writer went on to say that the 28-year-old Kate appears to not be dressing for herself, and is more concerned about how her outfits would look on a commemorative plate. Which, in my humble opinion, is nothing short of bitchy!

The fact is that when you're about to become a member of the British royal family, the fashion "codes" that everyone else lives by will no longer apply to you. As a royal, elegance and sophistication are the order of the day, and your clothing choices need to stand up to the test of time.

Kate Middleton is not devoid of fashion sense. She has worked in the industry and her choice of shapes, designers, and accessories reflects that she knows what's going on. Given her position, she's made the wise decision to tone down any of-the-moment pieces by placing them against a conservative backdrop, thus creating a style that is truly fit for a young duchess-in-waiting.

And it's not like she hasn't made more risque choices in the past!

Naturally, I'm not the only one who thinks so. British DJ and fashion icon Alexa Chung and Hollywood starlet Carey Mulligan are among the many admirers of Kate Middleton's style.

"I really love her," said Chung last week, "and I think she’s pretty elegant and classy, and graceful - all the things that someone in the royal family should be."

Said Mulligan, "She never looks like she’s trying to be anyone else and she’s comfortable in her own skin. She does that well."

With her fabulous blue Issa engagement dress gaining approval from fashion critics far and wide, I for one cannot wait to see which designer Kate chooses for her wedding dress! Tipped to be "the biggest wedding event since Charles and Diana", all eyes will no doubt be on Ms Middleton as she secures her place in the British royal family sometime next year.
