Becak, the Indonesian term for a rickshaw, will likely be the official means of transportation during the 2011 Southeast Asian (SEA) Games in Palembang, South Sumatra.
The SEA Games Committee has prepared 3,300 rickshaws to transport athletes and officials during the event.
Of the 3,300 rickshaws, 300 of them will operate around Jakabaring sports compound, the central forum of the SEA Games arena. The Jakabaring compound will be hosting shooting, athletics and swimming competitions.
“The drivers of these 300 rickshaws will be prepaid Rp 150,000 (US$17) a day by the committee, so passengers can use it for free,” head of the South Sumatra branch of the Indonesian National Sports Committee (KONI), Muddai Madang, said Thursday as quoted by kompas.com.
Another 3,000 rickshaws will be operating throughout Palembang. All the rickshaws will have the SEA Games’ logo on them.
“Officials and athletes are encouraged to use the rickshaws that bear the logo because we have trained the drivers about the importance of passengers’ satisfaction,” said Muddai. However, they must pay the rickshaw drivers operating in Palembang.
