Boxing Legend Joe Frazier Dies

Philadelphia – He beat Muhammad Ali in the Fight of the Century, battled him nearly to the death in the Thrilla in Manila. Then Joe Frazier spent the rest of his life trying to fight his way out of Ali's shadow.

That was one fight Frazier could never win.

Frazier, who died Monday night after a brief battle with liver cancer at the age of 67, will forever be linked to Ali. But no one in boxing would ever dream of anointing Ali as The Greatest unless he, too, was linked to Smokin' Joe.

He was once a heavyweight champion, and a great one at that. Ali would say as much after Frazier knocked him down in the 15th round en route to becoming the first man to beat Ali at Madison Square Garden in March 1971.

Butt was sentenced to two and a half years, Asif was handed a one-year term, while the 19-year-old Amir was sentenced to six months of prison time by the Southwark Crown Court here.

Three of Pakistani cricketers, involved in the most serious sports’ corruption scandal in more than a decade, will know their fate today (Thursday, Nov. 03) as the court finished hearing yesterday.

Photos and Video: Indycar Crash in Las Vegas -- English Driver Dan Wheldon Died at 33

LAS VEGAS - English driver Dan Wheldon expired after being involved in an awful multi-car crash that also ended Australian Will Power's hopes of winning the IndyCar championship in the Las Vegas season finale.

English Driver Dan Wheldon Killed in Indycar Crash in Las Vegas
English driver Dan Wheldon, winner of the famed Indianapolis 500 in May, died from injuries he received after his car was sent airborne over another car and clipped the catch fencing during the 15-car wreck.

The tragic accident also ended Australian Will Power's hopes of winning the IndyCar championship in the Las Vegas season finale.

The 33-year-old Wheldon's death from "unsurvivable injuries" has been confirmed by Indycar officials more than two hours after the horrific accident. "IndyCar is very sad to announce that Dan Wheldon has passed away from unsurvivable injuries," IndyCar chief executive Randy Bernard said.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with his family today."

Wheldon's fellow drivers had been informed of his death shortly before Bernard made his public announcement.

"IndyCar, its drivers and owners, have decided to end the race. In honor of Dan Wheldon, the drivers have decided to do a five-lap salute in his honor," Bernard said.

English Driver Dan Wheldon Killed in Indycar Crash in Las Vegas

The crash coming out of Turn 2 of the 1.5 mile Las Vegas oval on the 12th lap of the race left Townsend Bell's car upside down and smoking cars and debris strewn around the track.

"I've never seen such a mess in my entire career on the race track," said Danica Patrick, who was in her final race as a fulltime IndyCar driver before heading to NASCAR stock car racing.

Added Canadian driver Paul Tracy: "Just a horrendous accident."

Tracy had reported that a medical team was frantically attending Wheldon before the driver was airlifted to hospital.

The official confirmation of his death came some two hours after the race was stopped.

Despite two Indianapolis 500 triumphs and his 2005 series title, Wheldon hasn't been able to secure a full-time IndyCar ride, so he was racing from the back of the field in pursuit of a $5 million prize offered by IndyCar to a non-series driver who could win the finale.

The crash ended Australian Will Power's bid to overtake Dario Franchitti and claim the series title.

Power sat stunned in his car for some time and was later sent to hospital to be checked out because of back pain.

Scotland's Franchitti, who secured his third straight series crown and fourth overall after Power was ruled out, could be seen fighting for composure in his cockpit as the drivers formed up for the tribute laps.

"I could see within five laps people were starting to do crazy stuff," Franchitti said.

"I love hard racing but that to me is not really what it's about. You saw what happened, one small mistake from somebody ...."

There were 34 cars entered in the season finale - one more entry than at the Indianapolis 500 at the bigger Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

Drivers had voiced concern about the high speeds being reached at Las Vegas, where they were close to 225 miles per hour in practice this week.

"I'll tell you, I've never seen anything like it," Ryan Briscoe said of the sight of burning cars spinning on the track and sailing through the air.

"The debris we all had to drive through the lap later, it looked like a war scene from Terminator or something. I mean, there were just pieces of metal and car on fire in the middle of the track with no car attached to it and just debris everywhere."

Texas A&M routs Southern Methodist, 46-14

Cyrus Gray and Christine Michael ran for two touchdowns apiece and Ryan Tannehill threw for two more scores to help No. 8 Texas A&M beat Southern Methodist, 46-14, on Sunday night at College Station, Texas.

The Aggies were eager to get on the field and bring the focus back to football instead of the school's decision to leave the Big 12 Conference. They got things going early, intercepting Kyle Padron's passes on SMU's first two possessions to jump out to a 14-0 lead.

SMU Coach June Jones replaced Padron with backup J.J. McDermott after the early miscues, and he helped the Mustangs cut it to 20-14 in the second quarter.

But the Mustangs couldn't do much offensively after that and the Aggies scored 26 straight points.

Gray finished with 132 yards rushing. Michael, in his first game since breaking his leg last October, had 85. Tannehill completed 21 of 26 passes for 246 yards. Ryan Swope led Texas A&M's receivers with eight receptions for 109 yards and a score and Jeff Fuller added six catches for 52 yards.

Texas A&M had eight sacks, three by Tony Jerod-Eddie.

West Virginia wins

Geno Smith threw two first-half touchdown passes, Tavon Austin returned a kickoff for a score and No. 24 West Virginia beat Marshall, 34-13, in Morgantown, W.Va., in a game that was stopped early in the fourth quarter because of lightning.

Smith completed 26 of 35 passes for 249 yards. Despite difficulty running the ball, West Virginia improved to 11-0 against its cross-state foe, including six wins since the series resumed in 2006.

Marshall was limited to 13 first downs, 187 total yards and no offensive touchdowns.

The game was first halted with 5 minutes left in the third quarter because of severe storms and play didn't resume for three hours.

Play was stopped again with 14:36 left. But another hour went by before the game was called off, giving new West Virginia Coach Dana Holgorsen a soggy, successful debut.

The game was delayed a total of 4 hours 22 minutes.

Colorado's road problems continue

Bryant Moniz ran for a career-best 121 yards and three touchdowns and Hawaii beat Colorado, 34-17, on Saturday night in Honolulu, extending the Buffaloes' road woes and spoiling the coaching debut of Jon Embree.

Moniz, who had just 102 yards rushing in 2010 while leading the nation in passing, rushed for 120 yards and two scores in the first half alone. He also threw a 22-yard touchdown pass to Joey Iosefa in the fourth quarter to help seal the victory for the Warriors.

His scoring runs of 57 and 14 yards gave Hawaii a 17-0 halftime lead. He added a one-yard TD in the third quarter, pushing the lead back to 17.

Meanwhile, the road losses keep mounting for the Buffaloes, who made their debut as a member of the Pacific 12 Conference. It was Colorado's 18th straight loss on the road, 19 counting the 2007 Independence Bowl. Colorado hasn't won on the road since beating Texas Tech on Oct. 27, 2007.

It was a surprising performance for Moniz, who last year became just the 11th FBS quarterback to surpass 5,000 yards in a season. Moniz was 20 for 33 for 178 yards, far below his 360-yard average last year.

Georgia loses linebacker

Georgia sophomore linebacker Alec Ogletree will have surgery on his broken right foot and will sit out four to six weeks. Ogletree was injured in the first half of the Bulldogs' 35-21 loss to Boise State on Saturday.
