China Mine Accident (Thursday, Nov. 10) -- 20 Killed, 23 Still Trapped at Sizhuang Coal Mine in Yunnan Province

BEIJING, China (Nov. 10) – Breaking News: In latest of the accidents in the recent string of mining mishaps; at least 20 miners are reported killed today (Thursday, Nov. 10), Xinhua news agency reported.

The accident took place early today in southwest China causing another setback to China’s huge industry of mining. The accident at the privately run Sizhuang Coal Mine comes days after a rock blast in a coal mine in the central province of Henan trapped dozens of workers underground.

The accident in Yunnan province left around 23 other workers trapped, and it was not immediately clear if they were still alive or not, the official Xinhua news agency said. 

The official China News Service (CNS) said 20 people had been confirmed dead, and that efforts to rescue the remaining 23 from the mine were being hampered by a gas leak.

"Eighteen rescue workers are down in the coal mine, but the high levels of gas could cause an explosion, making it hard to progress with the rescue," Tan Xiaopeng, the head of the local firefighting department, told CNS.

Coal mine accidents are common in China, where work safety is often neglected by bosses seeking a quick profit.

Last year, 2,433 people died in coal mining accidents in the country, according to official statistics -- a rate of more than six workers per day.

Reportedly, China has taken strict measures to stop prospective “Occupy Shanghai” movement and tried to cut the basic means which helped transform to a global movement started with a very few numbers of activists in U.S.

According to UC Berkeley publication China Digital Times, Sina Weibo, China's hyper-popular microblogging site, is now restricting any and all search keywords that could tentatively be related with OWS movement.

"A long list of banned keywords on Sina Weibo’s search function has been uncovered and tested by the CDT team yesterday," writes Sandra Hernandez. "All the listed phrases stick to one simple rule: a combination of 'occupy' (占领) and a place name—provincial capitals, economically developed regions, and few symbolic local areas."

In short hundreds of millions of Sina Weibo users are no longer allowed to search for "Ocupy Beijing," for instance.

She was the 11th Tibetan monk, nun or former monk to self-immolate in western China in recent months.

While a Tibetan man has set himself ablaze outside the Chinese embassy in New Delhi to demand independence for Tibet. After this case there have now been 12 similar cases of self-immolation this year as part of protests against Chinese rule in Tibet.

The reports suggest that at least five have died in such fiery protests of Tibetan complaint about restrictions on their culture and religion and the continued exile of their spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama.

In 2003 China became the third nation to launch an astronaut into space, after Russia and the United States.

FOSHAN, China (Friday, Oct. 21) – The 2-year-old Wang Yue (aka Yue Yue/Yueyue) lost her battle for life early in the morning today (Friday, Oct. 21) in Guangzhou Military Hospital, Shanghai Daily reported.

Baby Wang Yue Died Friday Morning

Baby Wang Yue was hanging between life and death when she was knocked down by two vehicles last Thursday in a market in the city of Foshan of southern province of Guangdong, China.

CCTV footage of 18 people walking past her bleeding body without helping her until the 58-year-old Chen Xianmei stepped in to help the baby Yue Yue. Chen Xianmei was hailed for his act of mercy not only in China but throughout the world. The heartless attitude of people, who left her unattended despite of her critical condition, has ignited outrage both inside China and worldwide.

Baby Wang Yue has been treated in Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of Guangzhou Military Hospital until her death was declared.

Yesterday, in a statement to the media, the hospital declared that there was "no sign of her brain functions recovering after 48 hours of continuous monitoring." And after consulting with specialists in Beijing, Yue's medical team had concluded that she is now nearly brain-dead, the hospital stated further.

On later part of Thursday, Su Lei, the director of ICU said the baby could die "at any moment".

"I cannot tell how long she has left. We are still trying to save her, but the scenario is getting worse and worse," Lei said.

FOSHAN, China – The 58-year-old Chen Xianmei - the garbage collector or a "scrap peddler" (as mentioned by Adam Minter, author of the Shanghai Scrap blog) – who was the first to react to save the 2-year-old Wang Yue (Yueyue) knocked down twice by vehicles in city of Foshan (China), was reportedly rewarded 10,000 yuan ($1,588) by local officials.

A local company also announced their financial support of 50,000 yuan ($7,945) to the family of Wang Yue (Yueyue), also called Yueyue, and the rescuer, Chen Xianmei.

According to latest news; rescue teams are still unable to reach the 26 miners trapped underneath in an illegal coal mine after it flooded on Tuesday.

Reportedly, 45 miners were at work in the coal mine belonged to Hengtai Coal Mining Co., Ltd. Heilongjiang Province, northeast China when water flooded into the pit giving very limited time to workers for escape. Only 19 miners managed to get away in time while rest of 26 get trapped in the pit.  

Further details show that the flooded mine was part of a smaller mine that was being operated unlawfully, as it was supposed to stop production and be included into a larger mine before resuming operations, a spokesman with the provincial work safety administration said.

Moreover, the administration has advised local authorities to confirm the number of miners currently trapped in the coal mine. The administration vows to carry out a joint enquiry with the State Administration of Work Safety to find the cause of the mishap and penalize any individuals or companies who would be found to have despoiled laws and regulations in relation to the accident.
